I was recently referred to your website and thought I would share the story of a loss of one of our Baby Boomers.

I had a 46 year old grandmother living in the second bedroom of my house, we had isolated her from her husband because he was an alcoholic. She lived there for 2 years and I had no idea about her lifestyle. The attached pretty much pieces things together.

People think that it is the under 25's who are taking the easy or desperate way out. This now applies to the over 45's.

I have also attched a poem that was given to me by a friend who knew what was happening to me at the time. I think everybody can read their life into it somewhere.

Farewell to a Friend.

It has finally taken a fortunate contact with Arcadia House, a Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Canberra , to unravel the twisted web that has become LJ's lifestyle.

The use of Cocaine is all but unheard of in Canberra because of its high cost. It is known within the higher socio economic demographic in Sydney . It is a social drug which is addictive but may be kept under control by an educated user. In the event of addiction the user generally has an income to support undertaking rehabilitation in a Private Clinic. The other users may come to the attention of the public Clinics when they have become addicted to other drugs to keep them going.

The combination of Cocaine and Speed is a typical “bomb” called ‘crank' which is used to prolong the rush which is the addictive stimulation of Cocaine. The individual who shows all the typical signs of addiction to Speed or a legal Pseudo Ephedrine based substance may crave the Cocaine but can only use it when the funds are found. Cocaine is also quick to pass through the system so it will not show in most urine sample testing.

It would appear that LJ's lifestyle is part of the small Canberra user group which meets in the club environment between midnight to three a.m. , Thursday, Friday and Saturday night of Government Pay week. This fits the socio economic demographic capability to afford the Cocaine and also determines a profile of the group.

The common denominator within the group is that the individuals will have a metabolism which is prone to habit or addiction. The meeting to play the Poker Machines is a strong indicator and it would also be a group suitable to a female who has the other social problem, addiction to sex. The statistics also indicate that ninety three percent of the group will be smokers, the first indicator to a Drug Rehabilitation Counselor.

It is most likely that the group will be dominated by single men, whom are professionals or have positions within the Public Service which provide high disposable incomes. This may put them in the forties age bracket, which is generally the time in life when people whom have stayed with the single employer and purchased their own home will have paid off the mortgage. They also may not wish to become involved in a relationship and be open to no strings attached sex.

It is most unlikely for a mature woman to suddenly change completely without a severe shock such as Divorce, a death of a close friend or relative or an incident which suddenly brings out hidden sexual abuse as a child. LJ has a twisted hatred of men and detests the smell of alcohol on the breath. Any of these causes is probable and I would not rule out the possibility of all three.

It appears that all other aspects of LJ's lifestyle are under control. A Full time job, a home and an investment program to support her children. This means that she will not wish to enter rehabilitation as she enjoys her lifestyle and neither can the rehabilitation centre cater for her needs. The problem would be referred to a Professional Psychologist who would most likely recommend individual counseling as well as group therapy.

Knowing the single minded nature of the individual I can confidently say that this is never going to happen.

The Police will most likely not take action as their focus and budget is targeted toward prevention of firstly export and then import. There is nothing to be gained in interfering with the legitimate provision of service for members and guests within a Licensed Club nor the political backlash that could be associated with affecting income which is in turn Government and Political Party Revenue.

LJ may be able to continue her lifestyle provided that she does not become a public health risk. The indications that I was seeing, whilst she was living under my roof, or more importantly sharing the same bathroom, was that she was starting to work in a higher risk environment.

Legislation is being drafted to allow Service Providers to work from their own home. I expect that the individual would become a licensed person which would overcome the need to operate within a licensed premises and Soliciting in a Club Licensed premises would become legal. There will be apparent protest from the Eros Foundation; however the Legislation will pass on the grounds of OH & S.

LJ has been regularly discussing establishing a residence with a fellow worker and lead a comfortable lifestyle without the moral high ground dissention from people such as myself. It is not my idea of a lifestyle for a friend, however I acknowledge that she would be far more successful at setting up a high income home based business than I.

It has been necessary to take action to isolate and protect myself from LJ's lifestyle. I also have a clear conscience that I have done everything that I can as a friend and wish her well in her chosen lifestyle.

The external perspective is probably that I am a troublemaker. However the coincidental sources of my information lead me to believe that LJ is “moonlighting” in moving activity away from the “safe” environment. A form of addiction may be greed, that is, the need to take all the profit and not share as it is in the current arrangement. Directly, work the venue for six months, move the profits offshore and join the money.

I believe LJ has deceived everybody, including the wrong people, which means the end result may not be pretty.

The final offer is that I can introduce her to Arcadia under an assumed name and start the program to deal with her psychological problems.
I provided my own answer earlier, this chapter in my life is closed and I look forward to leaving Canberra .
