I was born in 1962 and I do not relate at all to the Baby Boomer Group. I and many of my friends of this group (1961/62/63/64) share none of the boomer aspirations. Perhaps we are closer to GenX, but I also believe there is a window of about four years in which people like me are kind of the lost generation. We had the opportunities of free education at University (Unlike most genx and baby boomers); we were pre-aids and the sexual revolution had occurred, feminism had kicked in so we had many many opportunities as women without the heavy 60's/70's baggage associated with feminism, punk music helped define our teenage years etc (60's music while fun, was very retro/ hippies were out and the Beatles had no relevance - except the murder of John Lennon). By the 1980's we were not seeking wealth nor settling down - we were in University, getting jobs, moving cities, but settling down was not in our parameters. I wish that we would stop being included as baby boomers. With thanks Suzanne Howard |
