Graceland
My travelling companions were still recovering from the long journey and were fast asleep, but I awoke early on the morning of our first full day in the USA.
I grabbed the camera and headed up Elvis Presley Boulevard to the gates of Graceland.
The tours don’t begin until 9:00am but if you are at the gates at 8:00am the security guards open up and you can walk up the long curved driveway towards the Graceland mansion. The house itself is not open at this time of morning but if you go to the right of the building you will see the pathway to the Meditation Garden.
The garden contains the graves of Elvis, his parents Vernon and Gladys and grandmother Minnie Mae. There is also a small memorial for his twin brother who was stillborn.
It was very quiet this particular morning and when I entered the gates there were only two other tourists who walked in just ahead of me.
It was very peaceful and birdsong was the only sound to cut the silence. It was wonderful to experience the last resting place of Elvis and I was almost alone with King. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up for a moment and I felt a sense of emotion at being there.
The peaceful moment was shattered by a group of German tourists who arrived en masse like a group of chattering stormtroopers. I didn’t care I felt at peace with the King….. |
