EDUCATION OF GIRLS & WOMEN
Cameroon, Uganda, Sierra Leone, India, Nepal, Bolivia & Dominican Republic:
Females have been denied an education throughout Africa, the Americas & Asia.
The World Bank & UN believe the education of females is a critical factor in moving from poverty to prosperity.
We need tutors, teachers, counselors, Women's Studies, & men & women who can gracefully help with attitudinal shifts.
AT-RISK YOUTH IN POST CONFLICT NATION, Sierra Leone
Abandoned kids were recruited by rebels during the war.
Now kids orphaned by the war are in the same vulnerable position.
New thrust to get kids out of orphanages into families. We need your help.
Our colleagues' aim is to prevent future conflicts
by increasing literacy & incomes; and engaging youth.

AMERICAS
Ecuador, Bolivia, Honduras
- Fledgling indigenous schools in Bolivian & Ecuadorian Andes need builders, tutors & teachers.
- School for children of single moms in Central America is committed to raising their kids out of poverty by giving their kids a good education.
- School & treatment center for children who have been orphaned by poverty, AIDS or abuse seeks skilled teachers, psychologists, youth workers, social workers & soccer coaches.
ASIA
Nepal, India, Himalayas, Mongolia
- Nepal has made an amazing transformation from monarchy to Maoist rebels to democracy. Nepal seeks tutors & skilled teachers. Nepal sees education as a "ticket out of poverty."
- India. Teach classes or livelihood skills to the rural poor in beautiful region next to lake. Also need well diggers & soccer players & coaches. Agricultural skills treasured.
- Remote Himalayas. This group has made huge strides in literacy & solar power. Fascinating!
- Mongolia. Wide open space. Because of language differences, teaching English is most viable option.
2. SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPERS NEEDED
In Africa & South America, there is an urgent need for small business development assistance.
We need people with:
- Entrepreneurial & small business experience;
- People that can "make somethin' outa nothin'".
- Resourceful; creative; strong people skills.
- Knowledge of Fair Trade marketing & eCommerce extremely helpful.
- Farming, gardening & agricultural experience also helpful.
3. HEALTH
- Work side-by-side with African doctor. Great way to learn the ropes. Great for doctors, nurses & students.
- "Village medicine." Africa. India. Andes. Many people in the world have never been to a doctor. Though you may not be able to diagnosis or treat everything, you will be far better than nothing.
- Midwifery & Nursing. Africa. Midwives & nurses needed in maternity clinics & to train traditional birth attendants. Para-professionals also needed (taking height, weight, vitals & helping mom & baby.)
- India. We have 3 sites requesting nurse, nurse practitioner, dentist, doctor, medical student, or nursing student for ~general practice or prevention education.
- AIDS: Doctors & nurses needed in AIDS clinic & in outlying villages.
You don't need credentials to be an AIDS or health educator.
- Andes. Help design programs to prevent high infant mortality. Need: Nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, mother-child specialists; Public Health. Sanitation. Nutrition.
- Nepal. Public Health. Doctors, nurses, dentists, nutritionists. Great for pros & students. Nepal has very high mortality rates due to malnutrition: 1000 children die every week in Nepal, 130 children every day, and 1 child every 10 minutes. 70% of the "under-five" deaths are due to malnutrition.
- Chinese doctors and acupuncturists. We saw Chinese hospitals in West Africa. Alas they are too expensive fo 95% of the people. We are piloting project to have Chinese doctors provide treatment at our office.
4. JOURNALISM & HUMAN RIGHTS
- Congolese Refugees are again fleeing the eastern Congo. We need your help with human rights education work. Critical to gain credibility gracefully. Informal works better. The goal is empowerment & capacity building. Turn questions back to them rather than you having answer. Experience as refugee &/or with Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed are valuable.
Education in human rights, international relations, Africa studies, journalism & media, the arts (dance, drama, music, art, carving), social work, & psychology helpful. French is a helpful though there are translators.
- Journalism & Democracy
In many countries, journalists are silenced or shut down so journalism is rarely fiery or investigative. We have some fascinating journalism placements that bolster democracy.

"NGOabroad is a fantastic service for anyone wanting to work internationally, be it paid or volunteer work. I was very impressed by Ann, her honest optimism (no sugarcoating but no dire warnings) and her curiosity about me and my goals as well as her obvious dedication. Ann's insight into and knowledge of the world and non-profit organizations is invaluable. I now have a much clearer idea of what opportunities are out there for me and I have a real understanding of where I can best contribute my skills."
