67 Retirement age- Wow!!! Where did that come from? I hate to say it but I told you so. The younger X, Y and Z generations will learn to dislike the boomers a great deal as all this unfolds. Huge taxes, lack of government benefits and a rising retirement age is just part of the negative baggage we will bring them in a society that will be barely recognizable to what they have been used to. The Mature Age presentation I do for BONZA and my employer Epic Employment Services- Mature Age Moving Forward - explains the big picture of why this has happened and how it will affect us all. Let me know if you want your employees, club members or group members to see the big picture. The reality is that if governments don’t make this type of decisions in the coming years, we could be real trouble financially. Aged pensions are not the only problem for them. Health will be the priority with a prediction of a tsunami of dementia, diabetes, cancer, blood disorders, mental health issues due to stress, joint replacements, heart problems etc, etc. and a lack of carers already. Aged care not far behind health due to 5 million of us ageing. The first will reach 65 in 2 years and the fun begins. Think of the needs of large numbers of aged in care, security (hundreds of thousands of single and widowed women by themselves and vulnerable) and social isolation. There are too many boomers and not enough of them to replace us in the workplace. Have a look at the bonza site- www.bonza.com.au- and check out the boomer timeline on the history page and you will see why we have to raise the pension age. I am personally glad it has happened so the mature age will start taking life after 50 as a new chapter for them to have new careers and fulfill dreams instead of looking for the finish line. It will be further away now and could even rise again if the going gets too tough for government. Forget about spending the kids inheritance as you will need it in a very challenging golden year period for us all. NOTE: BONZA advocates for a separate government office, a Maturelink, to highlight the importance of Mature Age looking to Move Forward in life not plan for retirement only in our older years. This is now even more essential now we have to work to 67. A need for incentives from government for families to build granny flats for the aged care of family members at home. A need for Community Health Clinics that the aged can attend and not clog the hospital system just as we had some priority at birth due to our numbers. A strong community based program for aged to take an interest in the local community through supporting schools, group exercising, supporting welfare groups and strong social clubs for the aged. Government incentives to allow us to retain/build assets so that we can support ourselves more as we age. Developments of the Uni of the Third Age so that minds are kept active through study and research. Lots to do folks so let’s get on with it and have a BONZA LIFE!
